Growing up I had fond memories of watching TMNT every Saturday morning. When I discovered Nickelodeon brought the turtles back to television it quickly grabbed my attention. After watching a few a episodes I found myself hooked! Not only did Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles exceed my expectations in the show, but it also managed to rekindle my former love for the turtles.

The first thing I noticed immediately is the show putting a strong focus into the story. In most cartoons the bad guys are bad and the good guys are good and thats just the way things are. But in Nick’s TMNT, the show has given The Shredder (and others) a developed background and real motivation for hunting the turtles. This makes for a surprisingly dramatic and well written plot, especially for a children’s cartoon. In fact sometimes it is easy to forget TMNT is for kids, and there are many points where the shows tackles darker themes. The maturity does not suck the fun out of the show as the show directors have done an amazing job of balancing the serious and the silly.

Everyone knows Raphael is the angry one, Mikey is a goofball etc. The newest iteration of TMNT goes beyond that and adds a level of depth to each turtle. Each one feel more like an individual instead of just a color and a dominant personality trait. If you’ve ever been a fan of saturday morning cartoons or TMNT this show is definitely worth checking out.
