The internet collectively lost it’s shit when the teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens hit the web a while back. I’ve never been a big Star Wars fan, but after the trailer I suddenly craved some Star Wars action. Luckily for me, Netflix just added Star Wars: The Clone Wars to it’s selection of tv. This 3d animated series focuses on the Clone Wars era of the Star Wars universe.
Following young Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and his padawan Ahsoka Tano, the show highlights major battles and events that take place during the Clone Wars. What are the Clone Wars you say? Well in an extremely oversimplified nutshell it’s a big galactic war. (Like I said before I am not a big Star Wars guy so I had no idea what the Clone Wars were previous to the show.)
The great thing about the Clone Wars is you don’t need to be a Star Wars fan in order to enjoy everything the show has to offer. Most of the action is centered around big battles between droids and clones. This means lots of big explosions and cool Sci Fi weaponry. If you’re looking for a quick fix of lightsaber action this definitely your show.
I also like how The Clone Wars doesn’t sacrifice story for action. The mini plots are handled with the same seriousness and quality of the films. Heroes and villains alike are easily likable (or greatly unlikeable…in a likeable way) and given lots of background history. Occasionally the show will shift focus to side stories of other Jedi and characters besides the main protagonist(s). I enjoyed these shifts as they provided another perspective and a change of pace. Some of the story arcs get dragged out way too long so it’s a great way to counterbalance.
After six seasons, I gained a greater understanding and an appreciation for the Star Wars mythos. I highly recommend Star Wars: The Clone Wars for fans and non fans alike.
